Activities involved in getting and using power in public life and being able to influence such decisions that affect a society or country boils down to politics.
Some politicians during campaigns vieing for political positions impress the public with the conviction that they will transform their lives and communities into a paradise.
Transforming lives means development and development constitute a new stage in changing situations,a process in which someone or something grows or changes and becomes advanced,reducing and eliminating poverty.
The choice of the people to pilot the affairs on the sit of the Mayor of mamfe Council through democratic election began in 2001.
Robertson Tabenchong ashu is the fourth elected Mayor of the mamfe Council after it was managed by appointees.
The choice of this young,kind ,generous, and soft spoken gentleman was guided by what the population envisaged in terms of development.
What has Mayor Robertson Tabenchong Ashu given back to his people from June 30th 2020 to 2034 after taking over from his late predecessor who was murdered by suspected separatists fighters just 80 days in office, on his way to his native Eshobi village.
His enormous archievements springs from his generous contributions in political and non-political gatherings.
This is a man who responds to all invitations and is present to comune with families ,group unions, and associations opportunities he uses to talk to them on the importance of peace and patriotism.
Temporal recruitment of youths and women can not be over emphasised,this he does quarterly distracting them from indulging into crimes and prostitution.Some have used the money paid them to establish small businesses.
Municipal roads are rehabilitated yearly, and the construction of farm to market roads in villages has also been his priority.
Taking into consideration the scarcity of water in mamfe,the mayor has provided equipped solar bore holes to almost all the quaters in mamfe and other neigboring communities,not forgetting the rehabilitation of village water schemes and water supply.
Many quaters,and compound have been made accessible with the construction of bridges,culverts and crossings.These have speed up development in those new quarters with the construction of new houses,confirming the saying that where a road passes,development follows.
The cry of the population due to the exorbitant prices for the transportation of sand and other building materials moved the Mayor to purchase two new 20 tons of dump trucks for mamfe municipality as the population still awaits two others.
After a series of meetings with butchers and bar owners, the price of a kilogram of meat was reduced to 2800frs from 3000frs using 13 new electronic scales purchased by the council.
Also, the prices of drinks have been cut down from 1000 to 800 frs for beer and 800frs to 600frs for soft drinks.
Transportation costs, which were also a problem to the population, have also been cut down.Transport cost from Mamfe to Buea was 12,000frs but has been reduced to 10,000frs,thanks to Lord MayorTabenchong Ashu
There has been the consistent strengthening of the lighting system in Mamfe,the streets have been lighted using solar lights because of the epileptic power supply, there by reducing insecurity,the incessant attacks in the night has been reduced as people now trek to their home right up to 11pm,a case that was rare.
Others include the supply of equipment to vulnerable populations especially due to the crisis, opening of cassava and maize farms to reduce the price of garri and corn.proceesed garri from these farms are sold at cheaper rates and maize supplied to those roasting corn by the road site who were initially receiving supplies from Bamenda at a higher prises and the risks involved.
Ther has also been the construction of a modern slaughter house,supply of hybrid calf to improve cattle rearing in mamfe,the extention of pig farm at mile two in mamfe,support to vigilant groups,and has trained municipal councilors to master their functions.
To boost knowledge and performance in serving the public,some staff members of the mamfe Council have received in-service training from the advanced school of local administration ( NASLA)in order to improve and work efficiently.
There is also the construction of recreational facility for children,construction of a municipal restaurant,construction of commercial stores phase 2,worth seventy five million francs,extension of three phase electricity to laterite pit quarter, worth fifty million francs,concrete pavement of 200 meters road at mainstreet Mamfe,on going construction and supervision of a modern market in mamfe, worth three hundred and ten million frs.construction of drainages to fight natural disasters from heavy rains.
For three years, Mayor Robertsons' capacity to provide his community with the above-mentioned in the circumstances of the crisis makes him a great and benevolent politician.
This reminds the population that money can buy amusement but not happiness, and for his people to be happy, it's important for him to be practical to improve on the living conditions of his people.
